Its thickness and tensile strength directly determine the sealing reliability and transportation safety of industrial bags. The core principle of selection is matching thread strength with bag weight, while taking into account bag material, sewing equipment, and service environment. An undersized thread risks seam breakage and burst during handling, while an oversized thread increases unnecessary cost and may damage bag fabric due to incompatible needle size.
Industrial sewing thread is commonly specified by English Cotton Count (Ne) with ply number and Tex count: a higher Tex value means a thicker, stronger thread; a lower Ne number means a thicker single yarn.

Difference Between Same Tex, Different Constructions

NE20/6: Twisted from 6 plies of finer 20-count yarn. It has a softer, smoother surface, producing a neater, flatter seam, suitable for food and consumer goods packaging with high aesthetic requirements.

3.1 10–25kg Light-duty Packaging: Tex 180 Series
For packages with a net weight under 25kg, Tex 180 provides sufficient breaking strength for normal transportation and stacking. This specification is compatible with most general-purpose bag closing machines and offers lower consumable cost, making it the first choice for small-batch, multi-category light packaging.
For thin PP woven fabric or single-layer paper bags, NE20/6 is preferred to prevent fabric tearing around needle holes caused by stiff thread;
For high-speed assembly lines, NE10/3 is preferred for its higher rigidity and more stable thread feeding.
3.2 25–40kg Standard Packaging: NE12/4 (Tex 200)
The 25–40kg range is the most common weight segment in industrial packaging, and NE12/4 (Tex 200) is the universal specification for this range. It balances strength and cost efficiency, and is compatible with most domestic and imported bag closing machines. Standard 25kg, 30kg, 40kg packages of grain, fertilizer, chemicals and building materials can all use this model with reliable seam strength and low burst risk.
For granular contents or long-distance bumpy transportation, upgrading to Tex 240 is recommended to add an extra safety margin.

4.1 Keep Safety Margin for Strength
It is recommended to reserve a safety factor of at least 30% for the thread’s actual working strength. For example, if the maximum seam load is around 120N, thread with breaking strength ≥ 156N should be selected to prevent seam burst from drop impact or stacking pressure.
4.2 Strictly Match with Sewing Machine Needle Size
Thread diameter must match the needle size: too thick a thread with a small needle causes needle breakage and skipped stitches; too thin a thread with a large needle leaves oversized needle holes that can tear the bag fabric.
Tex 180 / 200: generally compatible with size 18#–20# bag closing needles;
Tex 240 / 250: generally compatible with size 21#–23# bag closing needles.
4.3 Adjust According to Bag Material
PP/PE woven sacks: prioritize polyester thread with good abrasion resistance; double-thread chain stitch is recommended for heavy-duty scenarios.
Multi-wall paper bags: choose smooth, moderately soft thread (such as NE20/6) to avoid cutting paper layers with stiff thread.
4.4 Consider Service Environment
Polyester thread inherently has good moisture resistance, acid/alkali resistance and UV resistance. However, for long-term outdoor exposure, low-temperature environments, or contact with highly corrosive materials, high-tenacity polyester thread or UV-stabilized products are recommended to avoid aging and brittle fracture.
4.5 Cooperate with Seaming Process
Single-thread sewing is acceptable for light-duty sacks; double-thread sewing is recommended for medium and heavy-duty sacks, which can improve seam strength by over 50%.
Stitch density should be controlled at 7–9 stitches per inch. Too dense stitching damages the bag fabric, while too sparse stitching results in insufficient seam strength.
4.6 Compliance & Quality Requirements
For food, feed and pharmaceutical packaging, select polyester sewing thread that meets food contact safety standards. For products exported to the EU and North America, confirm that the thread complies with REACH, TPCH and other environmental regulations.
