Bag sewing thread is an indispensable core auxiliary material in the industrial and agricultural packaging fields. Its performance directly determines the sewing firmness, service life and appearance texture of packaging bags, and the selection of raw materials is the key core to determining the comprehensive performance of the thread. Bright polyester fiber and semi-gloss polyester staple fiber are the two most commonly used raw materials in the production of bag sewing thread. Both belong to the polyester staple fiber system, but due to essential differences in production processes and raw material characteristics, the finally produced bag sewing threads show significant differences in appearance, physical properties, processing adaptability and application scenarios. This article will comprehensively and accurately analyze the differences between the two from core dimensions without professional loopholes, providing scientific and practical reference for relevant practitioners in procurement, production, selection and other fields in the industry.

1. Core Difference Origin: Raw Material Production Process and Matting Agent Addition

The essential difference between bright polyester fiber and semi-gloss polyester staple fiber lies in the addition amount of matting agent (mainly titanium dioxide TiO₂) during the production process — this difference directly leads to fundamental changes in fiber surface morphology and gloss, and further extends to a series of subsequent performance differences, which is the core origin of all differences between the two. The specific process differences are as follows:

1. Bright polyester fiber: No or only a very small amount of matting agent is added during the production process (TiO₂ content is close to 0%). It is made of PTA (Purified Terephthalic Acid) and MEG (Ethylene Glycol) as core raw materials through precision processes such as spinning, drawing, heat setting, crimping and cutting. Its fiber surface is smooth and regular, and the cross-section is mostly a complete circle. When exposed to light, it produces strong specular reflection, showing a bright and sharp luster, and some products also have a slight metallic texture, hence the name "bright polyester fiber". This type of fiber has more stringent requirements on indicators such as fineness and breaking strength, and is a differentiated product among polyester staple fibers, with relatively high production and processing difficulty.

2. Semi-gloss polyester staple fiber: A small amount of matting agent is accurately added during the production process (TiO₂ content is about 0.3%). Matting agent particles are evenly distributed inside and on the surface of the fiber, which effectively destroys the smoothness and regularity of the fiber surface, making it present a slightly rough state. When exposed to light, specular reflection is converted into soft diffuse reflection, and the gloss is significantly reduced, showing a natural and soft matte texture without dazzling reflection. It not only retains the basic luster of polyester fiber, but also avoids the dazzling feeling of bright polyester fiber, and is currently the most widely used and cost-effective general-purpose polyester staple fiber raw material in industrial production.

2. Core Performance Differences (Fit for Actual Application Needs of Bag Sewing Thread)

The core application needs of bag sewing thread focus on "firmness and wear resistance, smooth sewing, and scenario adaptability". The performance differences between bright polyester fiber and semi-gloss polyester staple fiber directly determine the actual application effect of the produced thread. The specific differences are as follows:

(1) Differences in Appearance and Gloss

1. Bright polyester fiber: It has bright and transparent luster and strong reflectivity. The produced bag sewing thread has a clean appearance and outstanding texture, which looks more exquisite visually. When exposed to light, the surface of the thread will show a clear reflective effect, which is especially suitable for scenarios with requirements on packaging appearance (such as sugar bags, high-end food packaging, exquisite industrial packaging, etc.), and can effectively improve the overall texture and grade of the packaging.

2. Semi-gloss polyester staple fiber: It has a soft and natural luster without obvious reflection, showing a low-key matte texture. The produced bag sewing thread has a simple and elegant appearance without dazzling. Due to its slightly rough surface, the color of the thread can be more full and uniform. Even after dyeing, it can effectively avoid uneven color and color difference caused by reflection, which is more suitable for conventional packaging scenarios with no special requirements on appearance gloss and focusing on practicality.

(2) Differences in Physical Properties (Key to Affect the Service Life of Bag Sewing Thread)

1. Breaking Strength and Wear Resistance: Since no matting agent is added to bright polyester fiber, its internal structure is denser and the molecular arrangement is more regular. Its breaking strength is more than 10% higher than that of conventional polyester staple fiber. The produced bag sewing thread has more outstanding tensile performance, which can effectively avoid thread breakage during sewing and thread loosening during use; however, due to its smooth surface, the friction coefficient is relatively low, and its wear resistance is slightly inferior to that of semi-gloss polyester staple fiber. Because semi-gloss polyester staple fiber is added with a small amount of matting agent, its surface is slightly rough, with a higher friction coefficient and better wear resistance, which can better adapt to the friction loss during the handling and stacking of packaging bags, especially suitable for harsh scenarios such as heavy-duty packaging and frequent transportation; although its breaking strength is slightly lower than that of bright polyester fiber, it can fully meet the conventional load-bearing requirements of bag sewing thread (such as sewing for packaging ≤80kg), and has better performance stability.

2. Softness and Toughness: Bright polyester fiber has a delicate and soft texture. The produced bag sewing thread runs smoothly, is not easy to wrinkle or get stuck, and can perfectly adapt to the high-speed sewing needs of high-speed portable bag sewing machines, effectively improving production efficiency; however, its toughness is relatively weak, and it is prone to fatigue fracture under long-term heavy load and repeated bending conditions. Semi-gloss polyester staple fiber has a relatively stiff texture, stronger toughness and more outstanding fatigue resistance, which can withstand long-term heavy load and repeated bending, and is not easy to fatigue fracture. It is suitable for high-intensity sewing scenarios of heavy-duty bag sewing machines. Only when sewing at high speed, it is necessary to properly adjust the tension of the sewing machine to avoid unsmooth thread running.

3. Dry Heat Shrinkage Rate: The dry heat shrinkage rate of bright polyester fiber is more strictly controlled. After heat setting treatment, the shrinkage rate is usually less than 1%. The produced bag sewing thread has excellent dimensional stability. After sewing, the stitches are flat and beautiful, and it is not easy to have stitch shrinkage, wrinkles and other problems, which can effectively ensure the sewing flatness of packaging bags. The dry heat shrinkage rate of semi-gloss polyester staple fiber is slightly higher than that of bright polyester fiber. Although it can meet conventional packaging needs, the possibility of stitch shrinkage increases slightly in high-temperature environments (such as long-term outdoor stacking), which needs to be compensated by subsequent processing optimization.

(3) Differences in Processing Performance (Affecting the Production and Sewing Adaptability of Bag Sewing Thread)

1. Spinning and Twisting Performance: The surface of bright polyester fiber is smooth, so the cohesion between fibers during spinning is relatively weak, which requires higher precision of spinning process. It is necessary to optimize the twist and adjust the spinning speed to ensure the uniformity and strength of the yarn, otherwise problems such as yarn fuzzing and breakage are likely to occur; however, the produced thread has a smooth surface and uniform diameter after twisting, runs more smoothly during sewing, and is not easy to have faults such as thread jamming and skipped stitches, which is suitable for high-speed sewing lines. The surface of semi-gloss polyester staple fiber is slightly rough, so the cohesion between fibers is stronger, the spinning and twisting processes are simpler, the production efficiency is higher, the uniformity and stability of the yarn are easier to control, and the produced thread is not easy to fuzz or break, with relatively low processing cost; only because of its rough surface, it is necessary to properly adjust the tension of the sewing machine during sewing to ensure smooth thread running.

2. Dyeing Performance: The surface of bright polyester fiber is smooth, so its dye adsorption capacity is relatively weak. After dyeing, the color is bright and vivid, but the color fastness is slightly lower than that of semi-gloss polyester staple fiber. Especially in scenarios of long-term sun exposure and repeated friction, it is prone to fading; moreover, it has higher requirements on dyeing uniformity, and special dyeing processes are needed, otherwise problems such as uneven color and color difference are likely to occur. The surface of semi-gloss polyester staple fiber is slightly rough, so its dye adsorption capacity is stronger, the dyeing uniformity is better, and both sunlight fastness and friction fastness are superior to those of bright polyester fiber. The dyeing process is simpler, which is suitable for the production of bag sewing thread that needs various colors and has clear requirements on color fastness (such as colored industrial packaging thread, iconic packaging thread, etc.).

(4) Cost Differences

Since no matting agent is added to bright polyester fiber, the raw material cost is slightly lower, but the production process has higher requirements on process precision and quality control, the processing difficulty is relatively large, and the amount of waste silk and waste is relatively more, resulting in a not low comprehensive production cost. The final produced bag sewing thread has a relatively high price. Since semi-gloss polyester staple fiber needs to add a small amount of matting agent, the raw material cost is slightly higher than that of bright polyester fiber, but the production process is mature, the processing difficulty is low, the production efficiency is high, and the comprehensive production cost has more advantages. It is a more cost-effective general-purpose raw material. The produced bag sewing thread has a more affordable price, which is more suitable for mass and conventional production needs.

(5) Differences in Environmental Protection and Adaptability to Food Contact Materials

From the perspective of environmental protection and compliance of food contact materials, the differences between bright polyester fiber and semi-gloss polyester staple fiber mainly focus on raw material additives, production pollution and food contact safety, which is also the core consideration for the selection of bag sewing thread for food

1. Environmental Protection Comparison: Both belong to polyester staple fibers, and their core environmental protection characteristics (recyclability and degradability) are consistent. They are both recyclable polymer materials. After being discarded, they can be recycled through mechanical recycling, chemical recycling and other methods, which is not easy to produce white pollution; however, there are obvious differences in the environmental load during the production process. Since no or only a very small amount of matting agent (TiO₂) is added to bright polyester fiber, there is no need for additional matting agent mixing and dispersion processes during production, resulting in less waste water and waste gas emissions, lower production pollution, and better compliance with green production concepts and environmental protection policy requirements. Semi-gloss polyester staple fiber needs to add a small amount of matting agent (TiO₂). During production, it is necessary to strictly control the uniform dispersion of matting agent. If not handled properly, matting agent may remain in waste water and waste, increasing environmental treatment costs; however, the current mature production process can effectively control this problem, and its environmental load is still within the industry compliance range, with a small environmental gap from bright polyester fiber.

2. Adaptability Comparison to Food Contact Materials: Bag sewing thread for food contact must strictly comply with international and domestic relevant standards (such as US FDA, China GB 4806.6-2016 "Plastic Resins for Food Contact Use"). The core requirements are that the raw materials have no harmful residues, no harmful substances migrate to food, and meet food-grade purity standards. The adaptability difference between the two mainly comes from the addition of matting agent:

(1) Bright polyester fiber: Since no matting agent is added, its raw material composition is single (only polymerized from PTA and MEG), with no risk of additional additive residues. During production, it can easily meet the food contact material standards only by strictly controlling the raw material purity and processing cleanliness. The produced bag sewing thread has no peculiar smell and no migration of harmful substances, which is suitable for packaging scenarios directly in contact with food (such as sugar bags, grain bags, food-grade feed bags, etc.), especially suitable for high-end food packaging with extremely high requirements on food contact safety, which can effectively avoid food safety hazards possibly caused by matting agent migration.

(2) Semi-gloss polyester staple fiber: Since a small amount of matting agent (TiO₂) is added, two points need to be focused on for its food contact adaptability: first, the purity and addition amount of matting agent. Food-grade semi-gloss polyester staple fiber must use food-grade TiO₂ that meets FDA and GB 2760 standards, and the addition amount must be strictly controlled within 0.3% to avoid matting agent particles falling off and migrating to food; second, production testing. It is necessary to add additional testing procedures such as matting agent purity testing and harmful substance migration testing to ensure that the thread meets food contact standards. If non-food-grade semi-gloss fiber is selected, the matting agent may contain harmful impurities such as heavy metals, which is strictly prohibited for food contact scenarios; if food-grade semi-gloss fiber is selected and passes the test, it can be used for conventional food packaging scenarios (such as ordinary grain bags, outer packaging not directly in contact with food), but its safety is slightly inferior to that of bright polyester fiber, and the testing cost is higher.

3. Differences in Application Scenarios (Combined with Actual Application Scenarios of Bag Sewing Thread)

Based on the above core performance differences, the bag sewing threads made of bright polyester fiber and semi-gloss polyester staple fiber have clear divisions in application scenarios, avoiding problems such as poor sewing effect, packaging damage and cost waste caused by mixed use. The specific applicable scenarios are as follows:

(1) Application Scenarios of Bag Sewing Thread Made of Bright Polyester Fiber

Focusing on "exquisite appearance, high-speed sewing and medium-light load", it is mainly suitable for scenarios with requirements on packaging appearance, high sewing efficiency and moderate load, including:

1. Food packaging field: Such as sugar bags, grain bags, small feed bags, etc. These scenarios require clean and glossy packaging appearance, no obvious defects in threads, and need to adapt to high-speed sewing lines. The smoothness and appearance advantages of bright polyester thread can perfectly meet the requirement .

2. High-end industrial packaging field: Such as small light industrial product packaging, woven bags for gift packaging, etc. With certain requirements on packaging texture, bright polyester thread can effectively improve the high-end sense and grade of packaging;

3. Medium-light load packaging: Suitable for conventional packaging bags ≤40kg (such as ordinary PP woven bags, food packaging bags). Such packaging does not need long-term outdoor stacking and frequent transportation, and the strength and wear resistance of bright polyester thread can fully meet daily use needs;

4. High-speed sewing scenarios: Perfectly suitable for high-speed portable bag sewing machines such as Newlong, Fischbein and JUKI. It runs smoothly, is not easy to get stuck or skip stitches, can significantly improve sewing efficiency, and is suitable for mass production lines.

(2) Application Scenarios of Bag Sewing Thread Made of Semi-Gloss Polyester Staple Fiber

Focusing on "practical and durable, wear-resistant and tough, cost-effective", it is mainly suitable for scenarios with no special requirements on appearance, focusing on practicality, large load or harsh use environment, including:

1. Heavy-duty industrial packaging field: Such as fertilizer bags, cement bags, construction material bags (sand and gravel bags), heavy industrial raw material bags, etc. The load weight of such packaging is 40-80kg. The thread needs to have strong wear resistance and high toughness, and can withstand friction and heavy load during handling and stacking. The wear resistance advantage of semi-gloss thread is particularly prominent;

2. Long-term outdoor stacking scenarios: Such as agricultural feed bags, outdoor storage woven bags, etc. The thread needs to have good weather resistance and color fastness. The color fastness and fatigue resistance of semi-gloss thread can effectively avoid fading and thread breakage caused by long-term sun exposure and rain;

3. Conventional general packaging scenarios: Such as ordinary grain bags, light industrial product packaging, small and medium-sized industrial packaging, etc. There are no special requirements on appearance gloss, and cost performance and practicality are pursued. The comprehensive performance and cost advantage of semi-gloss thread can meet mass production needs;

4. Heavy-duty bag sewing machine adaptation scenarios: Suitable for high-power heavy-duty bag sewing machines (such as Union Special BC series, Newlong DS series high-power models). It has strong toughness, can bear the tension of high-intensity sewing, and is not easy to have problems such as thread breakage and thread collapse, ensuring production stability.

4. Summary and Selection Suggestions

The core difference between the bag sewing threads made of bright polyester fiber and semi-gloss polyester staple fiber comes from the different addition amounts of matting agent, which further extends to a series of differences in appearance, physical properties, processing performance, cost, environmental protection and food contact adaptability. There is no absolute advantage or disadvantage between the two, only different adaptation scenarios. The specific summary and selection suggestions are as follows:

1. Core Summary: The core advantages of bright polyester fiber are good appearance gloss, smooth thread running and strong dimensional stability, as well as better environmental protection and higher food contact safety. It is suitable for medium-light load scenarios that require appearance and sewing efficiency and need to be in contact with food, but its wear resistance and color fastness are slightly weak, and the comprehensive cost is relatively high; the core advantages of semi-gloss polyester staple fiber are strong wear resistance, good toughness, high color fastness and high cost performance, with mature processing technology. It is suitable for heavy-duty packaging, outdoor scenarios and conventional general scenarios that focus on practicality, and is currently the mainstream raw material for bag sewing thread production. Although its environmental protection is slightly inferior to that of bright polyester fiber, it can meet environmental protection requirements under compliant production. For food contact scenarios, food-grade raw materials must be selected and strictly tested. Both have the common advantages of polyester fiber — acid and alkali resistance, mildew resistance, moth resistance, and no decrease in wet strength, which can fully meet the basic application needs of bag sewing thread. The difference only lies in the focus of targeted performance.

2. Selection Suggestions:

(1) If you pursue exquisite packaging appearance, need high-speed sewing, and the packaging load is ≤40kg without long-term outdoor stacking, you should prefer bag sewing thread made of bright polyester fiber;

(2) If you focus on practicality, the packaging load is large (40-80kg), need long-term outdoor stacking or frequent transportation, or pursue high cost performance and mass production, you should prefer bag sewing thread made of semi-gloss polyester staple fiber;

(3) Supplementary for Special Scenarios:

If the packaging needs to be dyed and has clear requirements on color fastness, regardless of the load, you should prefer bag sewing thread made of semi-gloss polyester staple fiber; if the packaging is food-grade and has high requirements on the cleanliness of the thread appearance, you should prefer bag sewing thread made of bright polyester fiber (ensure that the production process meets relevant standards such as FDA); if the budget for food packaging scenarios is limited and the requirements on food contact safety are moderate, you can select food-grade bag sewing thread made of semi-gloss polyester staple fiber, and relevant test reports should be provided in advance; if you focus on green production and pursue lower environmental load, you should prefer bag sewing thread made of bright polyester fiber.

In summary, the selection of raw materials for bag sewing thread must be comprehensively judged based on core factors such as its own packaging scenario, load demand, appearance requirements, cost budget, as well as environmental protection and food contact safety. Reasonably selecting bright or semi-gloss polyester staple fiber raw materials can not only ensure the sewing quality of packaging and meet compliance requirements, but also effectively control production costs, achieving the optimal application effect and economic benefits.
